Whatever your reasons, sometimes the hardest part of quilting, sewing, crafting, or making anything is getting started. We’ve all had moments where we felt stuck. Creativity Coach Jenni Grover is giving us small manageable steps to get us over the bump and back into the groove of making and crafting.

Our next person for 30 Days of Dopamine 2025 is Coach Jenni Grover, our favorite creativity coach that we had on last year. Jenni always has such good advice, which you’d expect since it’s her job, but she’s also a quilter. So she knows the internal battles that happen when you’re trying to get going on a project or get back into the swing of things after a prolonged  (and maybe not on-purpose) break. For this time around we talked about creative inertia, aka you’re stuck and don’t know where to start.

Make sure to watch our full interview with Jenni on our YouTube channel here.

And if life gets in the way and you don’t have time to watch it, here’s the tldr for you:

  • Start small and start with something that brings you joy. If you’re gardening, cut a flower and look at it and smell it and enjoy it. Don’t try and convince yourself that weeding is the thing you have to do.
  • Leave all should’s at the door. There is no shame in using a tool or a coordinated kit or a perfectly matched fat quarter bundle. Don’t beat yourself up for using them. The ‘perfect action’ is the one that gets you moving in the direction you want.
  • Your working environment matters, including your technology. If you feel like your phone is a distraction, set it in another room. If twinkly Christmas lights make you happy, have twinkly lights. It’s not silly if it works and helps your brain feel ready.

Your goal for this week is to think about your shoulds. Are they keeping you from making what you want to make?
