We’re told often and early that there’s a right way to do things. Whether in the name of efficiency or profit or looking good or whatever the reason, someone wants you to do it their way. But how do you figure out if you like something if you’re not allowed to try?

Our last person for 2025’s 30 Days of Dopamine is Brittany Jepsen, founder of The House That Lars Built. I’ve followed along with The House That Lars Built for years, I think I found them because of one of their cute Christmas cards. Brittany started Lars in 2008 as a blog, but The House That Lars Built has grown and expanded becoming an award-winning lifestyle brand and design company. They focus on colorful design, decor, crafting, and joyful moments! We’re talking with Brittany about how experimenting and trying new things fuels your creativity.

And if you don’t have time to watch the video, but hopefully you can, here’s the tldr for you:

  • Don’t be afraid to not be the expert. If you’re not trying to follow someone else’s process, then you might figure out one that works better for you in the first place. And it takes some of the pressure off when something goes wrong.
  • A mood board or a collection of pictures you like or a folder saved on your phone all work the same way. Save your inspiration and then use it!
  • Speaking of inspiration, looking to the past is a great place to get ideas. However don’t feel like you have to recreate them. This isn’t a museum, give that design or craft or color palette your fresh take.

Your goal for this week is to start grabbing a bunch of inspirational images, wherever you find them. Maybe even make a note about what you like about them.

Thank you for following along with this year’s 30 Days of Dopamine!
