I’m still on an orange kick. I’ll balance it out with some other colors later. It’s still early days.

My philosophy with the blocks that only use one fabric (not including the background) is to use a busier fabric or a print that has multiple colors in it. Cue the Fortune Teller print from Astrologika. I admit I had tons of fun writing the fortunes for this print and doodling the all-seeing-eyes of Tabitha the Truth Teller, but I swear I didn’t fussy cut anything. The half square triangles are generous enough that you can get plenty of the print and variety in each one.

Speaking of half square triangles, this is how I cut mine:

  • Cut (3) colorful squares at 4″ and (3) background squares at 4″
  • Put right sides together and lightly draw a line on the wrong side of the lighter square
  • Stitch a ¼” seam on both sides of the line you drew
  • Cut on the line, press half square triangles open
  • Trim and square up half square triangle units to 3.5″

I’m having fun laying all my blocks out as I go, but I’m honestly trying not to do that too much. I don’t want to overthink things. I just want to sew pretty blocks. I’ll worry about color balance later.
